Roll Forming Standard Tolerances And Practices

The following standard tolerances will apply to all roll formed products unless specified otherwise at time of quotation.   We welcome inquires for orders requiring closer than standard tolerances, but they may incur additional cost for tooling, material, or production.

LENGTH TOLERANCE

Rough cut mill lengths or multiple lengths + 2.000”/ -.000”
Clean cut finish lengths   +/- 1/32” lengths up to 4 feet
+/- 1/16” lengths 4 to 20 feet
+/- 1/8” lengths 20 to 40 feet

Any length that can be handled can be produced, but maximum lengths are normally between 20 and 30 feet.   Depending on the section, we can produce short lengths down to a few inches and long lengths to a maximum of 70 feet.

ENDS
Finish lengths will normally be die cut with a minimum burr.   It is an inherent character of roll forming production that most sections, when cutoff to length, have a tendency to flare out or in at the ends.   The amount of flare varies according to the section and material from which produced.

CROSS SECTION DIMENSION TOLERANCES

Fractional dimensions +/- 1/32”
Decimal dimensions +/- .030”

Our equipment will accept a maximum flat strip width of 24 inches.   The height of any section cannot normally exceed 4 inches.   Together, these two figures will generally determine the maximum size of a section that can be roll formed on our equipment.

GAUGE TOLERNACE
All metal thickness tolerances will be in accordance with A.I.S.I. tolerance tables for wide sheet coil.   Our equipment will normally accept a maximum metal thickness of .134” and a minimum metal thickness of .036”.   Depending on the section, both lighter and heavier gauges can be produced.

STRAIGHTNESS TOLERANCE
Each length should be straight within .020 inches per foot of length.

TWIST TOLERANCE
The amount of twist should not exceed ½ degree per foot.

CORNER RADII
Standard inside corner radius is normally (1t) where “t” = thickness of metal.   Sharp inside radius can be produced, with extra tooling cost, provided material is sufficiently ductile.   Brittle materials may require a large corner radius of 3 or 4 “t”.   Where CS&T in-house tooling is used to produce a section, the corner radius will be determined by the existing tooling.

ANGLE TOLERANCE
All angles should be within one (1) degree of angle dimension specified.

SHIPPING QUANTITY TOLERANCE
All orders will be shipped in a quantity +/- 10% of the quantity ordered.

PACKAGING
Roll formed sections will normally be bundled in 4,000 lb. maximum lifts, steel strapped for open side flat bed truck shipment.
